Getting Twitter Followed is Not Enough – Twitter Lists Are Better

by Wynne Pirini

There’s one thing that I have noticed with Twitter: it’s pointless to get truck-loads of followers on your twitter account if you have no interaction with them. In this blog post I talk about how to filter out much of the noise by categorizing the people that you follow into Twitter Lists.

twitter lists

You know what it is like, you open your gmail account and there are a bunch of people that have decided to follow you. So you click on the links to see what their recent posts are about (or you should). If you are anything like me, and you see lots of advertorial crap then you won’t follow them back because you know darn well that there won’t be any value obtained from networking with them. However, if they appear to be a normal person tweeting about their interests, passions, and/or their life then you know that they have legitimate interest in following you and they would be safe to follow back.

If you follow more than 50 people then you will start to find that your Twitter inbox is filled with a lot of stuff that you have no interest in. In the beginning that’s what I found and I know that I am not alone on this because several people have mentioned the exact same problem to me.

So how do you solve this problem? One of the best ways that I have found is to categorize your followers into lists. There are two ways that you can this; the first one is to create a few Twitter Lists and then cateorize the people that you follow into lists. Let’s say that you wanted to follow people who were into ‘web design‘; well then all you would do is click the ‘Lists’ button in your Twitter profile and then create a new list. Once you have your new list, when following someone you can click on a little button and then add them to your list (see the following image).

To add one your Twitter network (you must be following them) to your list, just click the button shown in the image and then add them to the list. Easy!

Now when you go to your Twitter profile you can select the list that you are interested in and just view the tweets coming from them.

I use hootsuite and manage everything from there. I find it a lot easier and there are a slew of tools to do multiple things from one place. So you can do everything that I have explained here right from hootsuite. I would show you a screenshot but when I condense down the screenshot to show in my blog, it is far too tiny to see anything. However, I will be creating a video on how I use Hootsuite in a coming post.
