The other day I covered a social network called FourSquare. This is an excellent way for off-line location dependent businesses to promote themselves using online tools. However, BrightKite also has similar functionality. Instead of the ‘check-in’ process in FourSquare, in BrightKite you have ‘local promotions’.
Local businesses can sign up for free. According to BrightKite these promotions are getting a lot of interest from lots of brands. Names like gap, Time Warner Cable etc are appearing on there.
Just like FourSquare you can promote offers like a free drink with your meal or 20% coupon for Wednesday and Thursday, or whatever makes sense for your business.
Instead of the facebook model of requiring you to share you profile with friends, BrightKite works differently (which is great for business owners who really can’t be bothered to spend time building a social network). With BrightKite it is more a matter of who you decide to share your content with, but you can only see other people’s content if they opt to share it with you.
To sum up if you are a local business owner then more research into BrightKite, FourSquare, Google Buzz, and Gowalla (yet another of these networks) will be well worth your time.
