If you are performing search engine optimization for your website then check this out: I see lots of guides around the internet on how to research keywords. Some of them good, and some not so good. Usually there is a special tool that is offered to automate the process so that even a guy that has been hit in the head with a baseball bat 50 times could use it.
But the reality is that you need to get a solid feel for this stuff on your own first without having to revert to paid automation tools. Once you have had several shots at doing this manually, then a paid tool will be a lot more useful to you. So here is a quick 5 minute guide on keyword research.
- get a pen and paper and brainstorm the kinds of root words relating to your niche. For example if you were marketing in the Yoga niche then you might write “yoga, pilates, flexibility, stretching, meditation, meditating”.
- now write a list of solutions that these people might be looking for “CD, DVD, workbook, book”
- and write another list of problems they might be having “pain,sore joints, stress”
- now combine your root keywords with your two modifier lists to generate a list of 2 – 4 word phrases
- then feed each phrase separately into the free google keyword tool and this will generate even more keywords for you. You want to take the ones that have some obvious intention to buy, or they are looking for a solution to their problem, or they are looking for social proof for an excuse to buy.
*By the way there are tons of other modifier lists that you could make up too, so just use your brain and try to think of what your prospects are looking for.
There you have it – a great quick way to research high quality keywords for you niche. Believe me when I say these kinds of words will convert. I have been astounded at times to get 5 to 20+% conversion rates just on google & Bing search.
